Rīga Airport to build new air traffic control tower

A new air traffic control tower is to be built at Riga Airport by the end of 2026, the airport said in a release on October 25.

The EUR 51.25 million contract for the reconstruction of the building of SJSC "Latvijas Gaisa satiksme" (LGS) and the addition of a new control tower complex has been concluded with the construction company SIA "Aimasa".

According to the contract, the work is to start by January 1 next year and be completed within two years.

The contract amount is EUR 51,255,844.90 excluding value-added tax (VAT). The €26.26 million project is co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility. LGS will also receive a loan of EUR 25 million from the Nordic Investment Bank.

The existing 27-meter-high LGS air traffic control tower was built in 1973. It has 1970s engineering and design solutions and is finding it increasingly difficult to meet the needs of an evolving airport and the introduction of modern and innovative technologies. It will be retained as a replacement tower on the territory of Riga Airport.

The new air traffic control tower will have a height of 49.9 meters, a building area of 5958 square meters and a total indoor area of 12,185.8 square meters.

The tower will have one underground and nine above-ground floors.

The design of the new LGS control tower was developed by ATCT 2020, a three-member supplier alliance comprising Arhis Arhitekti, Leo A Daily, and Marcos Costilla Aviation Consulting Group, LLC.
