Major street of Rīga to undergo major changes

This year, an ambitious redevelopment of the Mūkusalas Street in Rīga, along the Daugava, will be launched, with a focus on improving the environment along the embankment, Latvian Radio reported on May 26.

The redevelopment of Mūkusalas Street is one of Rīga's five major infrastructure sites, for which the government supported a loan of €139 million last year altogether. Of these, at least €22 million is intended for the repair of the embankment between the Akmens Bridge and the Salu Bridge along Mūkusalas Street. It is a more than two-kilometer stretch with 18 hectares of land. The majority, or €12 million, is expected to be spent next year.

The main work will be to enforce the coast. Several years ago, specialists concluded that the total wear of the shore anchorage was between 50% and 90%, meaning the anchorages are in poor and even very bad condition.

In order to make it easy for pedestrians to get from the promenade of Mūkusala to the AB Dambis, which is headed towards the Vanšu Bridge, the municipality intends to create a pedestrian bridge that will stretch along the Daugava. It will be a safer path than it is at the moment. Now it's narrow and stretches along the road.

"The time for starting the works is likely to be the end of summer. Most of the works will take place outside the driving lanes, so that car traffic will not be significantly affected. However, it should be noted that the promenade along the Daugava section from the Salu Bridge to the Akmens Bridge could be closed to pedestrians and motorists. The part of the fence, which contains some elements of Soviet symbolism, will be dismantled. After performing the work, this will be one of the areas that will be cleaned up and enjoyable for both the Rīga residents and guests, " said Rīga City Council spokesman Kaspars Līcītis.

The work is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
