Cargo handled at Rīga port down 9.3% on year

Last year, 21,499 million tons of cargo were transhipped at Rīga Freeport, which is 9.3% less than in 2020, according to information released by the port on January 17.

The largest number of bulk cargo transhipped in the port in 2021 was 12,024 million tonnes, which is 11.2% less than in 2020. General cargo was transhipped at 7,205 million tonnes, a drop of 2.7%, while liquid cargoes were transhipped at 2,269 million tonnes, a drop of 17.9%.

Container cargo was handled at Riga port last year at 4,234 million tonnes, which is 8.7% less than in 2020, representing 19.7% of the total cargo handled at the port (19.6% a year earlier).

Last year, cereals and cereal products were transhipped at Riga port at 2.795 million tonnes, which is 2.4% less than a year ago and represented 13% of the total cargo handled at the port, while wood was transhipped at 2.591 million tonnes, an increase of 17.3% compared to the previous year, and represented 12% of the total cargo handled at the port.

Wood granules were transhipped in Riga port in 2021 at 2,261 million tonnes, showing an increase of 8.3%, while petroleum products were transhipped at 2,174 million tonnes, an increase of 18.5% less than a year earlier.

At the same time, coal was transhipped at Riga port last year at 1.119 million tonnes, which is 58.2% less than in 2020 and represented 5.2% of the total transhipped cargo (11.3% in 2020, 31.6% in 2019).

In 2020, a total of 23,712 million tonnes of cargo were transhipped at Riga port, which is 27.6% less than a year earlier.

The Riga port is the largest port in Latvia, according to the amount of cargo handled and the number of passengers handled.
