The supervisory board of RB Rail AS announced in Vilnius February 12 it had appointed Finnish executive Timo Riihimäki as the new Chief Executive Officer and Chairperson of the Management Board of the Rail Baltica Joint Venture.

He will start his duties from 11 March 2019 and will be based in Riga.

Riihimäki has worked in several management positions at NRC Group A/S (VR Track Oy previously), a leading Finnish railway engineering, construction and maintenance company and has lately been as Member of the Management Board and Vice President of Material Services and Track Machinery.

“[The] Supervisory Board welcomes Timo Riihimäki to this key position of the Rail Baltica project,” said Karolis Sankovski, Chairman of RB Rail AS Supervisory Board. “He has broad international and domestic knowledge in railway infrastructure construction, maintenance services and railway heavy machinery operations. In addition, he is experienced in corporate and business turnaround strategies and management of international companies and organizations. As for the present priorities, RB Rail Shareholders and Supervisory Board expects Mr. Riihimäki to strive for timely implementation of the detailed technical design phase on different sections of the Rail Baltica railway. We trust that thanks to his personal and RB Rail team’s involvement and devotion the project will continue to accelerate.”

“It will be a privilege to accept the challenge to coordinate the Rail Baltica Global Project. [The] Economic and social  mportance of Rail Baltica as well as its scale makes it one of the most complex and at the same time interesting projects in Europe to be involved in,” said Riihimäki in a company statement.

RB Rail AS is a multi-national joint venture of the Republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, established to coordinate the implementation of the Rail Baltica Global Project – a high-speed railway infrastructure from Tallinn to the Lithuanian/Polish border at a cost of around 6 billion euros.

RB Rail as a central coordinator is responsible for the design, construction and marketing of the Global Project. The headquarter of RB Rail AS is situated in Riga and the company currently employs 67 people.

As previously reported by LSM, the previous CEO Baiba Rubesa resigned last September.
