Fire-damaged ship 'Escape' to be pulled to Rīga port

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Two tugboats have started pulling the ship “Escape” on which a fire broke out during the night, to Rīga, the navy public relations specialist Līva Veita told LETA February 22.

The tugs “Stella” and “Orion” had started to tow the vessel to the port of Rīga. The vessels were also escorted by the “Saule” coastguard ship.

The Naval Headquarters and Supply vessel “Varonis” and the patrol vessel “Rezekne” also advanced toward the ship.

It is now said that the “Escape” will not be delivered to a port berth; instead, it will be anchored at sea near the port entrance.

The owners of the ship have sent a technical rescue specialist team to Latvia for the survey of the ship. Following the survey, the ship's owners will decide on the future fate of the ship.

As reported earlier, in the early hours of Wednesday, a fire broke out on the ship  “Escape” and the crew had to evacuate, being safely picked up by another ship in the area. The ship "Escape" sails under the flag of the Netherlands and carries a "dangerous cargo", consisting of polymers and paint materials, though these have not caught fire.
