This week, the transfer of the first new electric train produced by Skoda Group (Škoda Vagonka) to Latvia has been launched, said the passenger rail company Pasažieru Vilciens (PV) on June 22.

The new electric train is being transported, divided into parts, in four guarded trucks, by road.

The first parts will be delivered between June 21 and 23, and two carriages will be left for the next week.

Relocation from the Czech Republic takes place through Poland and Lithuania. Transport Minister Tālis Linkaits said in an interview with Latvian Radio on June 22 morning that the first carriages are currently near the Polish-Lithuanian border and are expected to be in Rīga on Thursday, June 23.

After arrival in Riga, an expert team will re-assemble the train. It will then be used for several months for various tests on the Latvian railway infrastructure, making sure that the electric train complies with safety and other standards. The same procedure will also be carried out for the other trains that will be brought in.

All 32 electric trains are due to be received by the end of 2023. Each of them will consist of four cars. The length of one electric train will be 109 meters. Each train will have seats for 436 passengers, and train doors will be level with the platforms, avoiding the alpinism required with the current stock of carriages when boarding and disembarking.
