Freight and passenger traffic plummeted in 2020 in Latvia

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data published March 4 show that in 2020, compared to 2019, under the impact of Covid-19, passenger traffic by all modes of transport, as well as freight transport volumes, have fallen significantly.

Passenger transport

In 2020, the number of passengers carried by land passenger transport comprised 152.1 million passengers, which is 36.4 % less than in 2019.

The number of passengers carried by rail transport comprised 12.9 million, a drop of 30.9 %. Number of passengers carried by national transport reduced by 30.4 %, but the number of passengers carried by international transport reduced – by 85.6 %.

86.8 million passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines, which is 38 % less than a year ago. Number of passengers carried in national lines reduced by 38 %, but the number of passengers carried in international lines reduced – by 45.8 %.

The number of passengers carried by urban electrified transport comprised 52.4 million passengers, a drop of 35.1 %.

In 2020, 466.3 thousand passengers arrived at and departed from Latvian ports, which is 56.5 % less than in 2019.

In 2020 the number of passengers arrived at and departed from the Riga International Airport comprised 2 million, which is 74.2 % less than in 2019. The largest passenger turnover at Riga International Airport was with airports of Germany – 307.9 thousand passengers, which is a drop of 68.1 %, with airports of the United Kingdom – 268.4 thousand passengers, a drop of 67.6 % and with airports of Russia – 167.3 thousand passengers, a drop of 81.1 %.

Freight transport

Last year 101.2 million tons of freights were carried by land and pipeline transport, a decrease of 16.8 million tons or 14.2 % compared to a year ago.

In 2020 rail transport freights comprised 24 million tons, which is 42.3 % less than in 2019. National freights by rail comprised 2.1 million tons – 21.1 % more. In international traffic the volume of freight carried by rail comprised 21.9 million tons, reduction of 45 %. Of which export freight transport – 2 million tons, 11.3 % less, import freight transport – 16.3 million tons, drop of 50.7 %, but goods in transit – 3.6 million tons, 20.9 % less. In 2020 transport freights via Latvian ports comprised 14.6 million tons, which is 53.8 % less than in 2019.

Freights by road comprised 75.7 million tons, which is 2.6 % more than in 2019. National freights comprised 60 million tons, 7.6 % more. International freights accounted for 15.7 million tons – 12.6 % less. Of which 4.5 million tons accounted for export freight – 4.8 % more, but import freight 3.1 million tons – 6.2 % less. Cross-trade and cabotage freights comprised 8.1 million tons, 21.9 % less than in the previous year. 76.3 % of total road freights were transportation for hire or reward. They fell by 0.8 %.

1.5 million tons of oil products were transported via main pipeline, which is 43.9 % less.
