Helicopter above Rīga maps 'digital twin' of city

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The low-flying helicopter, which has been seen above several Rīga suburbs in recent weeks, has performed laser scanning work to acquire a 3D model of the city and its surroundings, Latvian Television reported on August 31.

According to Latvian Television, the work is being carried out in the project implemented by the City Development Department of Rīga City Council entitled “The digital twin of the administrative territory of Rīga City.”

Rīga City Council said: “The implementation of the Digital Twin project will serve as a basis for the creation and development of the concept of Rīga as a smart city, providing investors with a variety of modeling opportunities provided by process electronification. The city's virtual model will contribute to speeding up the deadlines and processes of various development and construction projects, such as infrastructure sites [..]."

Flight plans have been agreed upon following a thorough investigation, and the performer of the work has received a special permit.  The Civil Aviation Agency told LTV that most of the planned flights have been completed and the low flights of the helicopter may also be observed outside Rīga borders.
