More passengers used Rīga Aiport in 2021 than in 2020

Data published by the Central Statistical Bureau January 24 show that in 2021, Rīga International Airport airport received 2.35 million passengers, a better result than in 2020 but just a third of the number handled in 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic made its appearance.

2021's figure is an increase of 17 % compared to 2020 but 69.8 % less than in 2019.

In December 2021, 303,000 passengers were received at Riga International Airport, which is 5.3 times more than in December 2020 and 11.6 % more than in the previous month. The number of passengers has decreased by 47.9 % compared to December 2019 when 581.9 thousand passengers were received at Riga Airport.

The total number of flights in December was 4,638, that is 2.2 times more than a year ago. In 2021, a total of 39 061 flights were operated, that is 9.7 % more than in 2020 and 55.1 % less than in 2019.

The figures for cargo were encouraging. In December 2021, the volume of cargo and mail unloaded and loaded comprised 3.7 thousand tonnes - an increase of 12 % compared to November and increase of 37.8 % compared to December 2020. The total volume of cargo and mail unloaded and loaded in 2021 amounted to 27.8 thousand tonnes, which is 19.9 % more than in 2020.

In December 2021, the airport unloaded 2.2 thousand tonnes of cargo and mail, which is 59.3 % more than in December 2020, and loaded 1.5 thousand tonnes, which is 15 % more than in December 2020.
