On Wednesday 12 May, the first preparations will be launched for the construction of the 1st round of the East Highway from Ieriķu Street to Vietalva Street in Rīga, according to the city council transport department.

Construction of the missing section of the East Highway (Austrumu maģistrāle) is one of the most ambitious road infrastructure projects in Riga in recent years, with a total cost of EUR 37.8 million.

The construction of the East Highway will provide the possibility to avoid Rīga City center and will relieve the historic center of Rīga and the neighborhood of Purvciems from freight transport (Dzelzava Street, Gustava Zemgala Street, Ieriķu Street).

The construction of the traffic infrastructure project is scheduled to be completed by June 2023. Given the scale of the project, the department calls on residents to treat the works with understanding and to follow changes to the traffic organization. First changes to the traffic organization will take effect next week.

The section between G. Zemgala and Dzelzavas Street will be closed as of next week. On Vaidava Street between Dzelzavas and Ieriķu Street, two-way traffic will be introduced. The bus stop Stārķu iela will no longer be in use.

Madonas Street is also planned to be closed due to works on Braslas Street. More precise information on traffic organization will follow, according to the Transport department.
