In a break with tradition, the Latvian capital's municipal transport company, Rīgas satiksme (RS), has announced that there will be no free public transport provided on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

"Due to the spread of Covid-19 and the restrictive measures introduced in the country, on December 31 and January 1 this year, public transport in Riga will not be available free of charge, as it was before,'' RS said in a  statement.

''In order to limit the spread of Covid-19 in the country, enhanced security measures have been introduced and the involvement of everyone is required. We call on citizens to use public transport during an emergency only when it is really needed," the company urged.

"This year, the celebration of the New Year will be celebrated in Rīga without the usual mass events... Given that passenger traffic on public transport has decreased and passenger traffic is expected to fall at the end of the year, buses, trolleybuses and trams will run on a holiday schedule on 31 December and 1 January. For passengers who have purchased weekday tickets, please note that on 31 December and 1 January, weekday tickets will not be valid for public transport," RS said.

On New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, the express buses of route 300 will run according to the holiday schedule. Express buses on other routes will not run during the holidays.

On December 30, the working hours of the customer service center at 49/53 Brīvības Street will be from 08:00 to 17:00, other customer service centers will work as usual on weekdays - until 19:00. Rīgas satiksme customer service centers are currently operating by prior appointment only. You can sign up for a visit to the customer center using the phone number 20361862 or the website: https://application.rigassatiksme.lv/TimeSlot/Register. Visitors should wear a mouth and nose covering.

On December 31 and January 1, all customer service centers will be closed.

On Saturday, January 2, and Sunday, January 3, the customer service center at Spīķeru Street 1 will be open from 10:00 to 16:00, other customer service centers will be closed.

Paid parking lots of Riga municipality, which are serviced by "Rīgas satiksme", will be available free of charge on December 31 and January 1, except for the underground parking lot at 5a Krišjāņa Valdemāra Street - where the parking lot will have to be paid for according to the valid tariffs.
