One dead in police car crash in Ādaži

Take note – story published 2 years ago

On Saturday night a major accident occurred on the Tallinn Highway – an Ādaži municipality police car crashed into the metal ropes of a tow truck, Latvian Television reported January 23.

The driver of the police car died at the site of the event, while two victims – the other policeman and a tow service worker – were taken to hospital.

The accident occurred after a bus had veered off the road, followed by a tow truck that had lowered the ramp and attached metal ropes. The fast-moving police car crashed into the metal ropes and hit a person.

Deputy Chief of Police of Ādaži Municipality Gints Dzirkalis told LTV: "We cannot comment further because the State Police is conducting an investigation. On our part, we will carry out an internal inspection of the service. We have, of course, been in contact with the relatives of the deceased worker. We have informed them of this sad event."

In connection with the incident, the State Police has launched criminal proceedings.

State Police spokeswoman Līna Kaļķe said: “The driver of the Škoda [police] car died at the scene of the event. Two people with injuries were taken to a medical facility. The State Police has started criminal proceedings on what happened and all the circumstances of the incident will be explained during the investigation.”
