Passenger and freight traffic picked up in Q1 in Latvia

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data published on June 2 show that in the first quarter of 2022, compared to the first quarter of 2021, passenger and freight traffic by all modes of transport has increased.

Passenger transport

In the first quarter of 2022, the number of passengers carried by land passenger transport comprised 34.1 million passengers, which is 37.1 % more than in the first quarter of 2021 and 33.9 % less than in the first quarter of 2020.

In the first quarter of 2022, 69.4 thousand passengers arrived at and departed from Latvian ports, which is 56.9 % more than in the first quarter of 2021, but 57 % less than in the first quarter of 2020. At Riga Passenger Terminal ferry traffic was still closed, at Ventspils port passenger turnover comprised 57 thousand passengers, which is 55.7 % more, but at Liepāja port – 12.3 thousand passengers, 62.9 % more than a year ago.

In the first quarter of 2022, the number of passengers who arrived at and departed from the Riga International Airport comprised 778.2 thousand, which is 7.2 times more than in the first quarter of 2021 and 37.8 % less than in the first quarter of 2020.

Freight transport

24.7 million tonnes of freights were carried by land and pipeline transport, a rise of 1.4 million tonnes or 6.2 % compared to a year ago and 18.2 % more than in the first quarter of 2020.

In the first quarter of 2022 the cargo loaded and unloaded at ports comprised 12.3 million tonnes, which is 10.5 % more than in the first quarter of 2021 and 1.5 % more than in the first quarter of 2020. Freight turnover at Riga port was 5.8 million tonnes, 7.1 % more, at Ventspils port – 4 million tonnes or 10.6 % more, at Liepāja port – 2 million tonnes or 30.7 % more, but at minor ports – 0.5 million tonnes or 11.4 % less.

Airport “Rīga” loaded and unloaded 6.4 thousand tonnes of freights or 12.9 % more.
