Passenger and freight transport figures rise in 2022

According to data published December 2 by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB),  in the nine months of 2022, compared to the nine months of 2021, passenger traffic by all modes of transport has risen.

In the nine months of 2022, 118.3 million passengers were carried by land passenger transport, which is 24.1 % more than in the nine months of 2021 and 1.2 % more than in the nine months of 2020, but 33.8 % less than in the corresponding period of 2019.

The number of passengers carried by rail transport comprised 11.7 million passengers, which is 39.2 % more than a year ago and 14.7% more than in the nine months of 2020, but 17.5 % less than in the corresponding period of 2019 before the pandemic. The number of passengers carried by national transport rose by 39.1 %, but the number of passengers carried by international transport – 3.4 times.

In the nine months of 2022, 292.3 thousand passengers arrived at and departed from Latvian ports, which is 61.5 % more than in the nine months of 2021, but 29.5 % less than in the nine months of 2020 and 64.9 % less than in the nine months of 2019. At Riga Passenger Terminal ferry traffic was still closed, at Ventspils port passenger turnover comprised 225 thousand passengers, which is 51.9 % more, but at Liepāja port – 67.3 thousand passengers, 2.1 time more than a year ago.

In the nine months of 2022, 3.9 million passengers arrived at and departed from the Riga International Airport, which is 2.8 times more than in the nine months of 2021 and 2.2 times more than in the nine months of 2020, but 34 % less than in the corresponding period of 2019.

CSB data show that in the nine months of 2022, compared to the nine months of 2021, freight carried in transport by land and pipeline has remained at the level of the previous year, but by sea transport – has increased. 77.8 million tonnes of freights were carried by land and pipeline transport, which is 0.2 % less than a year ago and 7.6 % more than in the nine months of 2020, but 12.3 % less than in 2019.

Rail transport freights comprised 16.5 million tonnes, which is 8.4 % more than in the nine months of 2021, but 5.9 % less than in the nine months of 2020 and 48 % less than in the corresponding period of 2019.

61.1 million tonnes of freights were carried by road transport, which is 1.8 % less than in the previous year, but 13.8 % more than in the nine months of 2020 and 11 % more than in 2019.

In the nine months of 2022 the cargo loaded and unloaded at ports comprised 35 million tonnes, which is 16 % more than in the previous year and 5.4 % more than in the corresponding period of 2020, but 25.8 % less than in the nine months of 2019.

Airport “Rīga” loaded and unloaded 15.7 thousand tonnes of freights or 14.2 % less than in the nine months of 2021, 2 % less than in the corresponding period of 2020 and 20.9 % less than in 2019.
