For example, the area of city squares will increase more than three times, from 1316 to 4454 square meters.The green, currently non-accessible area is expected to increase significantly from 8841 to 25859 square meters. Territory of transit zones and roads will drop to 25%, while the squares will account for more than 49% of the cobbled area.
The landscape will include trees and other plants for urban environment.
"There will be a new promenade, a street, squares and spaces for locals and guests. It is our task to put into exploitation the Central Railway Station and the surroundings in summer 2025 as a well-designed, professionally constructed landscape with trees, shrubs and high-quality, well-fitting elements. The green squares are important to the urban environment and are so specific to Riga,” said Xavier Debruche, director of the BereRix project.
The design and project agreement work, including the greening project, will continue until spring 2021, when the most intensive phase of construction works begins. The first preparatory and dismantling work, as well as some construction work, will start in autumn 2020. The reconstruction of the Riga Central Railway Station, the railway bridge over Daugava and other infrastructure will be completed in the summer of 2025.
