Riga International airport passenger numbers rising

Take note – story published 3 years ago

As the number of flights grew and new destinations opened, the number of passengers at Riga International airport increased by more than 400% in June, the airport representatives told news agency LETA on July 3.

Riga airport provided service to 55 445 passengers in June, with a monthly increase of 437%. However, the drop in the number of passengers served in June compared to June 2019 remains significant – 92.7%.

In the first half of this year, compared to the corresponding period of 2019, the number of passengers at Riga airport decreased by 62.9%. During the first six months of the year, 1.3 million passengers were serviced at the airport.

International passenger flights to Latvia are permitted from countries where COVID-19's cumulative 14-day illness rate per 100,000 inhabitants is below 25, as well as from countries included in the European Commission's list of safe countries. The list of countries is available on the homepage of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control and is updated weekly on Fridays. The airport calls on passengers to carefully consider the need for travel and to make sure that the flight is not planned from/to a country within a group of banned countries before purchasing tickets.

The agency LETA reported that last year Riga airport served a total of 7.798 million passengers, which is 10.5% more than in 2018. This year, on the other hand, given the limits of the pandemic, the airport forecasts a drop in the number of passengers to 1.6 million, while the number of passengers next year could reach 4.6 million.
