Rīga public transport cuts ride numbers by 18%

As of Wednesday, November 3, the municipal public transport company “Rīgas Satiksme” will reduce the number of rides by 18%, as the company's employees are currently ill en masse, head of the company Džineta Innusa said at a press briefing November 1.

About 1,000 rides will be cancelled of the 5,800 total daily rides on weekdays. The new timetables will be in effect starting Wednesday, November 3. The reduction is designed to not affect the hours of the morning and the evening.

The reason for this reduction in the number of rides is illness of drivers. “We've been living in a pretty stressed working environment for a week. [...] It's not just Covid-19,” Innusa said. The company employs 1,501 drivers, of which 330 have sick leave, including 53 ill with Covid-19.

Innusa said that there are 178 employees in “Rīgas Satiksme” who have expressed a categorical stance against vaccination. Consequently, dismissal and termination of employment is inevitable later, Innusa said. To fill that gap, the company launched training of new drivers in October.
