From January 2020 the Rīga City Council plans on closing down a road in the city center to street traffic once a month on the first Saturday, according to LETA news agency on December 17.

The first such experiment is planned for January 4, when Tērbatas Street will be closed to automobile traffic from Elizabetes Street to Stabu Street.

The City Council says this project aims to promote resident mobility, and that the project will be implemented over several months. The reactions of residents, businesses and other groups in society to the changes will be monitored. The initiative came about in cooperation with the Riga Center Development Community.

The closing of the roads doesn’t necessarily mean that a public event will be held on the streets, however businesses can apply for permission to conduct business on the street, for example, selling drinks. On these days the street will be accessible to pedestrians and cyclists, as well as public transportation.
