The weekend on Latvian roads has been tragic as eight lives were claimed as a result of accidents, LETA reported August 8.

In total last week, ten people were killed in road accidents. Six of the victims were drivers or passengers of cars, one was on a motorcycle, one on a quadricycle, one on a bicycle and one was a pedestrian.

The accidents took place in the parishes of Babīte, Skrudaliena, Vītiņi, Medumi, Straupe, Nagļi, and an unspecified location in Kurzeme. The most severe accident took place Sunday morning in Babīte parish, where a car and a bus crashed. Two people who were in the car died.

Ten casualties is a high weekly number, compared to overall statistics. Last year, 139 people were killed in road accidents in total, so this weekly statistics is four times the average.
