Irish budget airline Ryanair will invest 165 million euros (200 million US dollars) in having two aircraft based at Riga International Airport, the airline's commercial director Jason McGuinness told media representatives on Wednesday April 28, LTV reported.

With the establishment of the base at the airport, 60 new jobs will be created, the company said. It was later clarified that the quoted amount covers maintenance of aircraft as well as job creation but does not include the construction of any new hangars or other structures.

Ryanair plans to operate 95 flights a week from Riga Airport on a total of 30 routes, including 16 new routes, which will connect Riga with many destinations in Europe from October 2021.

"We are delighted to announce the opening of a new base in Riga, which will support economic recovery as well as international connectivity," said Jason McGuinness, Ryanair's commercial director, describing the move as a "significant announcement for the Ryanair Group".

"Efficient operations and competitive airport charges provide the foundation from which Ryanair can deliver long-term traffic growth and increased connectivity. We have worked closely with Riga Airport to ensure this growth and improve services for those who live, work or want to visit the region... and look forward to commencing the recruitment for these roles very soon," said McGuinness.

Ryanair told LSM the new routes would include Budapest, Malaga, Palermo and Paris Beauvais (Destinations below marked with two asterisks are still subject to regulatory approval while those with three asterisks are described as being new winter services launching in the summer).
