Sales of new cars in April went up 88% on year in Latvia

A total of 5,617 new cars were sold in Latvia during the first four months of this year, 8% more than during the corresponding period of 2020, according to data published May 14 by the Latvian Authorized Automobile Dealers Association.

Of that number, sales of new passenger cars in Latvia increased by 6.3% in the first four months of 2021, representing 4,838 units, while sales of new light commercial transport increased by 20.4% or 779 vehicles.

In April this year, compared to the relevant month of 2020, the number of new passenger cars sold in Latvia increased by 88.3%, or 1584 vehicles against 841.

The most popular in the first four months of this year were Toyota brand cars - sold 942 new cars, 16.8% of all new cars sold, and 16% more than in the first four months of last year.

Data gathered also show that in the first four months of this year, the most popular were Toyota Corolla cars - 268 sold, followed by Škoda Octavia (261), Toyota Rav4 (239), Volkswagen Tiguan (180) and Škoda Kodiaq (157).

The association said a breakthrough was witnessed in the electric car segment in April, with 80 new electric vehicles sold this month, 56 of which are Škoda  Enyaq.

Although this breakthrough is related to the provision of transport for the Riga world championship in hockey, these cars will remain in Latvia after the championship. The second most popular electric car in April was a Nissan Leaf with five units, followed by a Porsche Taycan with four sold cars.

In 2020, a total of 15 642 new passenger cars were sold in Latvia, 25.3% less than in 2019.
