Czech automobile maker Skoda and Swiss train builder Stadler will be competing for the rights to supply 12 low-deck tramcars to Rīgas Satiksme municipal transport company, Rīgas Satiksme spokeswoman Baiba Bartasevica told LETA May 30.

She could not give more detailed information about the bids submitted by the two applicants in the Rīgas Satiksme tender as their proposals are still being reviewed.

May 28 was the deadline for bids in the tender.

The tender was originally announced on April 30 with the deadline set on May 2 but afterwards the deadline was extended twice - first till May 14 due to technical problems and then till May 28 due to the interest of potential bidders in the details.

Purchase of 12 low-deck trams is one of the phases in the implementation of a project to launch a new tram line in the Skanste area of the Latvian capital.

The project includes construction of a 3.6 kilometers long new tram line in the Skanste area and renovation of the infrastructure of some of the existing tram lines, arrangements for power supply, purchase of 12 new low-deck trams, development of a traffic management system as well as renovation of certain streets and re-arrangement of utility lines.

The total eligible cost of the project is €97.4 million, of which up to €70 million will come from the Cohesion Fund. Rīgas Satiksme will contribute €27.4 million to the project.
