Speculation about airBaltic sale in UK press

Take note – story published 6 years ago

The United Kingdom's Evening Standard daily has run a story speculating about potential buyers for Latvian airline airBaltic.

The piece published July 31 mentions British Airways owner International Airlines Group and speaks of "some of Britain's biggest airlines" without naming them.

In fact, though IAG is the parent company of Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia and Vueling, it is a Spanish registered company with shares traded on the London Stock Exchange and Spanish Stock Exchanges. The corporate head office for IAG is in London, UK.

Ireland's Ryanair and Hungary's WizzAir also get a mention, though chiefly as rivals rather than bidders.

The Latvian government has hired blue-blood finance firm Lazard to help it find a buyer for airBaltic, the newspaper says.

"We don’t want the speculation to go wild, but you cannot predict anymore what will happen," airBaltic CEO Martin Gauss told the newspaper.

A sale is "on track to complete by the end of the year" the paper adds.

Bloomberg also recently reported on the increasing likelihood of a sale this year.
