Tallink's Rīga-Stockholm route to remain closed in 2022

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Due to low demand and rising fuel prices, Tallink has shut down ferry traffic on the Riga – Stockholm route until next year, Latvian Television reported April 10.

Isabelle ferry, which had planned to launch regular cruise routes to Sweden in early April, has become a Ukrainian war refugee hotel in the port of Tallinn. More than 2,500 travelers had purchased cruise tickets for a trip to Stockholm.

During Covid-19, cruises were suspended. The first cruise to Stockholm was scheduled for April 6, but it was later transferred to the beginning of June. Last week, the company announced that there would be no traffic at all. On Tuesday afternoon, the ferry Isabelle, which had been a part of the Rīga landscape for more than 15 years, left the port.

Tallink confirmed to Latvian Television that ferry traffic with Stockholm will not be restored this year, but there are hopes that the ferries will set sail again in 2023.

“It's a very significant route for us, we've been building it for so many years and we don't want to lose it. And we have very loyal customers, both in Latvia and Sweden, and we want to offer an easy travel opportunity between countries. And we will try to restore it,” said Katri Link, head of communications for Tallink.
