Transport Minister: temporary carriers possible on regional routes in Latvia

Take note – story published 3 years ago

New passenger carriers are planned to take over regional bus routes in June 2021. For some, the contract will end earlier, so Transport Minister Tālis Linkaits (New Conservative Party) said to Latvian Television on June 2 that temporary carriers might be in place for a few months.

In an interview on the Latvian Television broadcast Rīta Panorāma, Linkaits expressed hope that new permanent carriers will start work in June net year. However, some contracts expire sooner, at the end of this year or the beginning of next year. In  these cases, the Road Transport Directorate will assess whether the previous service provider will be able to continue work until the new contract is in place, or whether it will seek a temporary carrier.

The Minister must also prepare a report to the Prime Minister. "The Prime Minister is concerned about the state budget, and justifiably so. On the one hand, there is a desire to ensure high-quality transport, on the other - money, as always, is not enough for everyone," Linkaits commented.
