On July 23, two U.S. F-35 fighter jets landed at the Lielvārde Air Base and is the first time that these ultra modern aircraft have arrived in Latvia, LETA was informed by Defense Ministry spokeswoman Sandra Brāle.

At the same time, two F-15 fighter jets also landed at the air base, where they refueled and departed onwards on their mission.

The jets arrived in Latvia as part of the United States' Baltic air defense operation Rapid Forge.

Rapid Forge is a US Air Force led operation with the aim of improving the battle capability and readiness to carry out operations in areas where there are no major air force bases.

The aircraft have been deployed to NATO allied countries with the aim of strengthening collective defense.
