From Thursday, November 17, 17:00 to Friday, November 18, 18:00, the movement of pedestrians, bicycles and electric scooters on both sides of the Vanšu bridge will be banned, said Rīga City Council.

In anticipation of the potential influx of people on the Vanšu bridge, it was decided, for safety reasons, to close the bridge for pedestrian and cyclist traffic.

According to Rīga City Council, the bridge is safe for daily load-bearing, but safety risks are possible at higher loads. At the same time, the council recommended that public transport be used. The city's public transport is free on public holidays.

The municipality noted that the last special inspection for the Vanšu Bridge was carried out in 2020. The inspectorate concluded that the load-bearing capacity of the bridge was satisfactory, but usability was unsatisfactory.

The Transport Department of the Riga City Council received a recommendation to develop a building project of the Vanšu Bridge, which should be implemented within four to five years after its development. The procurement is currently underway. The construction project is planned to be developed in 2023, so that the construction work can be started in 2024.
