So far, repair works of Rīga streets have received very little funding. This year, it is planned to allocate 15 million euros to this end, which is around 15 times more on average than in previous years, said Ķirsis.
According to the Vice Mayor, last year's scan of all Rīga streets shows a bleak picture. The main streets are in more or less satisfactory condition, but minor streets are not doing as well. To achieve a 'more or less' satisfactory condition, 30% or 1,000 kilometers need repairing, which would need at least EUR 200 million.
The solution to the problem would be to remove the top layer of the street and lay a new one every ten years.
Speaking about potholes appearing with the snow melting, Ķirsis said they would be patched up once the temperature is at least +5 to +10 C.
This year, major roadworks are planned on Ģenerāļa Radziņa embankment, as well as along Rail Baltica construction. It is planned to restore traffic on Brasas bridge this year, but at the end of March or beginning of April – to commission the new Sarkandaugava overpass. Other major works include the East highway project and the Mūkusala embankment reinforcement.
