Take note – story published 5 years ago

With more than nine-tenths of the results in Latvia's 13th Saeima elections counted, the share of the vote won by each party looks clearer by the minute. Harmony topped the poll with 19% of the vote followed by newcomers KPV LV on 14%, the New Conservatives on 13%, For Development/For! on 11%, the National Alliance on 11%, the Greens and Farmers Union on 10% and New Unity on 6% (based on incomplete data).

LSM tracked down two political commentators in the studios of LTV and asked them about the results and the likely shape of the next Latvian government.

Filips Rajevskis said the process of forming a government would be a war of attrition rather than a swift battle, and that it would require several parties to make significant concessions in order to team up. He also suggested the barnstorming antics of KPV LV might be rained in if the party was to transition from voluble opponent of the existing coalition to integral part of the next government.

Meanwhile Iveta Kažoka agreed that the government formation process would be extremely lengthy and a new government would likely not be in place until next year.
