What can you do to help Ukraine?

The situation in Ukraine has generated a desire to help or contribute in some way among the Latvian population. But what can you do? Various different initiatives are already in place. Here are details of some of them.

1. Donate to the Ukrainian central bank

The National Bank of Ukraine has decided to open a special fundraising account to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. NBU Governor Kyrylo Shevchenko announced the opening of this special account in his 24 February video address.

The number of the special account: UA843000010000000047330992708. This account accepts multiple currencies. It has been established and opened to receive transfers from international partners and donors in both foreign currency (U.S. dollars, euros, UK pounds) and hryvnias.

2. Donate to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi has stated that the humanitarian consequences on civilians of this conflict will be devastating and urgently needs help to continue providing life-saving protection to families forced to flee their homes. UNHCR has stepped up its operations and capacity in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. 

"Your support can help ensure that Ukrainians forced to flee their homes are sheltered and safe," it says.

3. Donate to 'Stand with Ukraine'

The Ziedot.lv charity fundraising site has already raised more than 2 million euros. Fuel and first aid supplies are being sent to Ukraine in co-operation with the Ministry of Defense.

4. Entrepreneurs for Peace

Latvian businesses have banded together in a private-sector fundraising drive. The initial goal of the private sector is to raise at least 5 million euros. It is being spearheaded by the 'Riga Tech Girls' team.

5. Easy to Help

This volunteer initiaitive calls on businesses and individuals to support the organization of humanitarian aid. Business are asked to apply, indicating the goods that the company can donate. After filling in a questionnaire, the representatives of the volunteer movement will contact you, indicating the address for delivery of the goods to the logistics centre in Riga and agreeing on the exact amount of the goods. In cooperation with the public administration, the goods will be delivered to Ukraine.

A second strand coordinates aid to Ukrainian war refugees and asks any civilians who want to help in any way (donating goods, offering transport, offering accommodation, etc.) to register here. Upon receipt of the application, volunteers will contact you to coordinate the aid immediately.

6. I want to help Refugees

This portal provides information for Ukrainian refugees arriving in Latvia and also registers Latvian residents who are able to offer accommodation and other support to arriving refugees including employment opportunities, legal help, and more.

7. Contact your local municipality

Local municipalities are co-ordinating the provision of accommodation and other services to arriving refugees. They will be able to tell you exactly what opportunities there are to help locally.
