Latvian goverment approves public media resilience upgrade

At its September 3 meeting, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to support the initiative of Latvian Television (LTV), the Public Electronic Media Council (SEPLP) and the Ministry of Culture (KM) and redistributed 1,950,687 euros for the purchase of an LTV unified control system to ensure the continuity of the television signal in the event of an external threat to the country.

LTV is classed as a part of the state-level important critical infrastructure, the reduction of operational capabilities of which would make it difficult to manage the state and threatens public and national security.

The unified management system is planned as a long-term investment that would ensure LTV could continue to provide production and programs in emergency and/or exceptional situations.

The planned costs for the purchase of the unified control panel to ensure the continuity of the TV signal in 2024 are 2,224,504 euros: expenses in the amount of 1,950,687 euros are planned to be covered by the funding to be redistributed from the budget department during the annual state budget execution process to the funding of the program for measures to strengthen national security, while 273,817 euros is planned to be covered from the LTV funds allocated in the general state budget grant.

Funding will be redistributed to SEPLP subject to apprval from the Saeima's Budget and Finance (Tax) Commission.
