After two years of global virus pandemic, the current global economic and geopolitical climate has been made even worse by Russia’s massive military aggression against Ukraine. Russia’s actions challenge the rules-based international order that the United Nations has stood for and represents. The instruments of the UN to contribute to solving both regional and global challenges are being questioned yet again. That relates, among others, also to ensure joint efforts for sustainable development, including battling climate change, zeroing hunger, providing education and gender equality, and peace and justice across the globe.

Therefore, the event seeks to achieve two strongly linked goals. First, identifying the toolbox for protecting the rules-based international order is crucial for achieving Agenda 2030 goals. Second, to assess the UN’s ability to continue providing progress towards Agenda 2030 goals in the current global political and economic climate.

The round-table discussion will start with the address by Abdulla Shahid, followed by remarks of Ambassador Andrejs Pildegovics, Permanent Representative of Latvia to the UN, and followed by comments and questions to Abdulla Shahid by the audience in presence. The event will be moderated by Dr. Karlis Bukovskis, Acting Director of the Latvian Institute of International Affairs.

As previously reported by LSM, from 21-23 July 2022, the President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid, will visit Latvia. This will be the first visit by a sitting President of the UN General Assembly.

The visit will include meetings with senior Latvian officials and the Chairman of the Riga City Council, as well as a visit to the Riga Support Center for the Residents of Ukraine, and Riga Technical University.

All 193 UN member states are represented in the General Assembly, which acts as the main decision-making body of the UN. The General Assembly convenes annually in September and meets throughout the year. At the beginning of each session, the General Assembly elects a new president on a rotating basis. Abdulla Shahid became the President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2021, representing the Asia-Pacific region.

The General Assembly has elected Ambassador Csaba Kőrösi of Hungary to preside over its 77th session. He will assume his functions at the beginning of the session on September 13, 2022.
