Irēna Kucina appointed President of Constitutional Court

On November 28, Irēna Kucina, the current Vice-President of the Constitutional Court, was elected President of the Constitutional Court (CC). All seven Justices voted in her favor.

Kucina was also the only candidate nominated for the post.

The hearing was attended by ST Justices Jānis Neimanis, Anita Rodiņa, Jautrīte Briede, Veronika Krūmiņa. Mārtiņš Mits, Juris Juriss, the chair of the hearing Irēna Kucina, the secretary of the hearing Alise Ločmele.

Irēna Kucina studied at the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia. In 2007 she obtained a Master's degree in Law, and in 2011 - a Doctorate degree in Law.

She has worked professionally for many years in senior positions in the public administration. She has been Deputy State Secretary for Judicial Affairs at the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Latvia, leading the development of judicial policy, ensuring the development and capacity building of the judiciary. From 2016 to 2019, she was the Representative of the Republic of Latvia to the Court of Justice of the European Union. From 2019, she was Deputy Head of the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Latvia - Head of the Office of Advisers to the President of the Republic of Latvia, Adviser to the President of the Republic of Latvia on Rule of Law and European Union Law.

On December 9 2021, Irēna Kucina was confirmed as a Justice of the Constitutional Court. She took office on February 11 2022.

On March 10 2022, she was elected Vice-President of the Constitutional Court.
