58 MPs voted in favor of his confirmation, 18 voted against and 11 abstained.
Juriss was nominated by the Ministry of Justice for the vacant post of Constitutional Court justice, as the term of office of Artūrs Kučs expired on September 2, 2024, due to his accession to the post of European Court of Human Rights judge.
The Ministry of Justice pointed out that Juriss is a lawyer of a high caliber who has demonstrated his competence and professionalism as Chief Prosecutor. Currently, Juriss is the Chief Prosecutor of the Anti-Money Laundering Coordination Unit of the Criminal Law Department of the Prosecutor General's Office.
In 2013, Juris Juriss obtained a Doctor of Law degree in Criminal Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia.
According to the Ministry, Juriss' knowledge and competence are also confirmed by his long-standing work in academia, as a lecturer at various Latvian higher education institutions, including the University of Latvia, the University of Economics and Culture and Turiba University.
The Constitutional Court has seven judges and, in accordance with the Constitutional Court Law, the Saeima approves the appointment of judges. Three judges of the Constitutional Court are confirmed on the proposal of no less than ten members of the Saeima, two on the proposal of the Cabinet of Ministers, and two on the proposal of the Plenary of the Supreme Court. The term of office of a Constitutional Court judge shall be ten years.
