India asked to open embassy

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with Sushma Swarajthe Minister of External Affairs of India 18 September, to discuss political and economic cooperation and ask that India open a Latvian embassy.

The meeting took place during the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the foreign ministry's press service said. 

"Edgars Rinkēvičs affirmed Latvia’s intention to continue the active political dialogue with India and proposed that the next political consultations be held in Riga. The relations between Latvia and India show a good record; in light of this we are interested in a further exchange of high level visits and in expanding political and economic contacts, emphasised Foreign Minister Rinkēvičs and suggested that India should open its embassy in Riga," said a release from the ministry.

The Latvian Foreign Minister and his Indian counterpart discussed cooperation in the field of information technologies, food processing, transport and logistics.

Rinkēvičs confirmed that Latvia was also interested in signing a cooperation program in higher education and invited the Foreign Minister of India to visit Latvia.
