Latvia calls on Germany to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine 'now'

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs made an unequivocal plea Saturday morning to Germany: send tanks to Ukraine now.

Writing on Twitter, Rinkēvičs said: "We, [Baltic states] Foreign Ministers, call on Germany to provide Leopard tanks to Ukraine now. This is needed to stop Russian aggression, help Ukraine and restore peace in Europe quickly. Germany as the leading European power has special responsibility in this regard."

The statement from Rinkēvičs comes just a day after a meeting of Defense Ministers in Ramstein, Germany, failed to secure a pledge from Germany to send tanks, or even to authorize other countries such as Poland and Finland to send German-make Leopard II tanks to aid the defense of Ukraine.

In a clearly co-ordinated move, Rinkēvičs' Estonian and Lithuanian counterparts tweeted exactly the same words.
