Latvian candidate for UN post endorsed by all three Baltic states

Dr. Mārtiņš Paparinskis has been nominated for election to the International Law Commission (ILC) for the term 2023-2027, the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said February 24.

The elections will be held at the United Nations General Assembly in November 2021. Mārtiņš Paparinskis is the first candidate from the Baltic States to seek to join the International Law Commission.

"Dr. Mārtiņš Paparinskis has an extensive academic and practical experience in the field of international law, both at the national and international level. Currently, he is Associate Professor in Public International Law at University College London, Faculty of Laws. His practical experience in public international law is reflected in a number of appointments to various international bodies under the auspices of UN and other international organizations,"  said a statement from the Ministry. 

The main task of the International Law Commission (ILC)  is the progressive development of international law and its codification. The ILC was established in 1947 and is composed of 34 independent experts elected by the UN General Assembly. The work of ILC has led to the adoption of many international treaties and other important documents.
