Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, used a visit to the United Nations 18 May 2018 in New York, to call for the deployment of UN-backed peacekeepers in eastern Ukraine.

Rinkēvičs met with the United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, to discuss the Under-Secretary-General’s aims and priorities in her future activities, exchanged views about topics including the conflict in the east of Ukraine, and Iran’s nuclear deal, according to a release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"The officials shared opinions on developments in the eastern Ukraine. Edgars Rinkēvičs expressed regret that the clash between Ukraine and Russia was a serious conflict in Europe calling for a realistic political and practical solution. The Minister expressed conviction that real peace in the east of Ukraine could be achieved under a UN mandate deploying UN peace-keeping forces at the Ukrainian-Russian border," the release said, without quoting anyone directly.

However, the minister did also tweet similar sentiments.
