Estonia's new ambassador to Latvia, Arti Hilpus, presented his credentials to Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis in Riga on July 31.

In a conversation that followed the ceremony of presenting the credentials, Hilpus and Vejonis spoke about the close cooperation and partnership of the two countries. The ambassador forwarded greetings from Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid and affirmed the desire to strengthen the bond between Estonia and Latvia even more during his term of office, spokespeople for the Foreign Ministry said.

"We must keep and continue developing active and friendly relations that dominate between Estonia and Latvian both on the bilateral level and as kindred spirits in the European Union and NATO," Hilpus said.

The ambassador and president discussed the close cooperation between Estonia and Latvia in different fields and touched upon the exchange of high-level visits in relation to the 100th anniversary year of both republics.

"A good example of the special relations between the two neighboring countries is the joint session of the governments of both countries, which is scheduled to take place on August 21 in Riga," Hilpus said. President Vejonis also highlighted the special bond between Estonia and Latvia in light of the 100th anniversary of statehood.

Hilpus considered important getting acquainted with the various regions and Latvia and recalled the successfully functioning cross-border cooperation that brings the local governments of southern Estonia and northern Latvia closer together.

Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid on June 6 appointed Hilpus as the country's new ambassador to Latvia and recalled Tonis Nirk from the post.

Until now, Hilpus served as Estonia's ambassador to Russia, a position in which he started service in November 2015.

Hilpus worked as an advisor at the Government Office from 1995 to 1996. Hilpus has been working at the Foreign Ministry since 1996, including as the head of the personnel department and director of the EU foreign and security policy division.

He served as first secretary for political affairs in the Estonian embassy in Berlin from 2001-2004 and then headed the security policy division in the ministry's first political department. From 2009 until 2012, Hilpus was Estonia's ambassador to Norway and Iceland.

Before heading to Moscow, Hilpus served as ambassador to Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia located in Tallinn.
