The term of office of the head of the Constitution Protection Bureau is five years. The number of terms of office per person is not limited.
On behalf of the Saeima National Security Commission (NDK), Māris Kučinskis (Union of Greens and Farmers) stated that the Commission supported Sweden's candidacy unanimously.
Saeima deputy Valērijs Agešins (Harmony) drew attention to the fact that SAB is an institution dealing with serious issues, so it is important that a politically neutral professional enters the office.
“One of the threats to national security is chatty officials who don't use their opportunities to keep silent,” said Agešins. “I have no information that Egils Zviedris would associate with a particular political party.”
Zviedris has been working in the national security authorities since 1992 and at SAB since 2000. He is currently deputy director of SAB and chief of the Intelligence Board.
Zviedris has an engineering bachelor's degree in construction and a master's degree in business management.
The Constitution Protection Bureau is one of three state security services. The main tasks of SAB include intelligence, counter-intelligence and protection of official secrets. SAB also ensures protection of NATO and EU classified information in public institutions engaged in work with such information.
