On 23 May 2019, Latvia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Secretary General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Angel Gurría, to discuss Latvia’s cooperation with the OECD.

Amongst other things "The officials discussed preparations for the visit of Angel Gurría to Rīga on 29 May to present the OECD’s latest Economic Survey of Latvia and the Environmental Performance Review," a Foreign Ministry statement said.

The meeting between Edgars Rinkēvičs and Angel Gurría took place on the margins of the annual Meeting of the Council of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) at Ministerial Level in Paris, France. The main theme of this year’s event was harnessing digital transition for sustainable development.

At the event, a declaration by the OECD Council of Ministers was approved, which highlighted the most important OECD recommendations and declarations. A statement by the Chair of the Council of Ministers Meeting was also issued, covering the issues of artificial intelligence, taxation in the digital sector, competition, security, privacy and data, the future of labour, digital innovations, sustainable development, and a resource-effective economy and trade in the digital age.

The ministers approved the OECD Council Recommendation on Artificial Intelligence, which is the first set of intergovernmental policy guidelines on artificial intelligence and upholds international standards that aim to ensure development of safe and principles-based artificial intelligence systems.
