The Saeima in the final reading on March 21 adopted a bill on the rights of British citizens after the UK leaves the EU.

According to the UK’s referendum results on June 23, 2016, the UK will withdraw from the EU on March 29, 2019.

British citizens who have been legally residing in Latvia until March will continue to enjoy rights and obligations of individuals in the area of social security.

The bill includes solutions for all possible risks and complications that have been identified so far. There are also two potential Brexit scenarios included – for the no- deal exist and for an exit with an agreement, said foreign committee chairman Rihards Kols (National Aliance).

“In case of any of these scenarios, we expect the UK to ensure the parity principle, guaranteeing the same rights for Latvian nationals residing in the UK,” said Kols.
