Two Latvians held in Belarus now free, others advised to note emergency contact details

Take note – story published 3 years ago

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs said August 13 that two persons from Latvia were known to be among the thousands detained by forces loyal to the regime of Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus as a brutal crackdown on civil liberties and dissent escalates.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the embassy in Minsk worked to provide the necessary consular support to secure the release of the two individuals, the minister said.

The effort appeared to pay off with confirmation August 14 that the pair had been released.

The minister also issued a warning about traveling to Belarus and provided a reminder that in an emergency situation, it is necessary to immediately contact the Latvian Embassy in Belarus, the Latvian Consulate in Vitebsk or the 24-hour duty officer of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by phone (+371 26 337 711) or e-mail ([email protected]).
