Berzina has until now been heading the Central Election Commission’s Information Department, is taking over from the Central Election Commission’s long-standing chairman Arnis Cimdars.
Saeima approved Bērziņa's nomination for the position by 53 votes to 32.
Cimdars was supported by 29 MPs, while 56 parliamentarians voted against his reappointment for another term in office.
Bērziņa was nominated for the Central Election Commission’s head by the ruling coalition parties. The Greens and Farmers Union meanwhile had nominated Cimdars.
Bērziņa is due to take office as the Central Election Commission’s chairperson this Friday, March 22.
After her nomination, Bērziņa said that her first priority would be to ensure the quality of the upcoming European Parliament elections. As the preparation for the elections is nearing the end, it would be difficult for someone who has not been involved in it to take all things over.
Also, Bērziņa would like to work on other issues, such as online registration of voters at polling stations that would eliminate stamps in passports. Bērziņa also wants to increase wages for members of election commissions, ensure more convenient voting for people who are abroad on the election day.
