More competition for a seat in parliament this year in Latvia

Take note – story published 1 year ago

There will be more competition in the Saeima this year than in previous parliamentary elections four years ago, Kristīne Bērziņa, president of the Central Election Commission (CVK) told Latvian Radio on August 2.

She said that there were 17 candidates for one seat at the moment even before the last three applications were submitted, while there were 14.6 candidates per seat in the previous elections.

According to Bērziņa, it is currently apparent that, compared to previous elections, there is a higher proportion of women among candidates, while the average age is quite unchanged, slightly above 46. The youngest candidate is 21 years old, while the oldest is 92 years old.

On Tuesday, August 2, the CVK will stop accepting the lists of candidates for the 14th Parliamentary elections. Three more parties are expected to present the lists today, with a total of 19 lists announced for the Saeima elections. The candidate lists and party programs are available on CVK's 14th Saeima elections website.

The next parliamentary election in Latvia, to decide the composition of the 14th Saeima, will take place on October 1, 2022, when 100 members of parliament will be elected for the next four years. More information about the Saeima elections is available from the CVK website: https://www.cvk.lv/en
