Opposition MP takes over as mayor of Daugavpils

Take note – story published 6 years ago

On June 26 MP Andrejs Elksniņš (Harmony) was elected the mayor of Daugavpils. Another MP Rihards Eigims (Greens and Farmers Union) was elected vice-mayor.

Nine councilors voted for Elksniņš' candidacy while six of them voted for the previous mayor Jānis Lāčplēsis (Latgale party).

Even though the Latgale party received six seats - the most of any party - at the recent municipal election, Harmony received five seats and Eigims' Our Party was awarded four so they were able to unseat the current mayor.

It is not known yet who will take the two lawmakers' places at the Saeima.
