New Harmony takes Riga election results to court

Take note – story published 3 years ago

Political party New Harmony has taken to the Administrative Court with regard to unsealed ballots at Riga City Council elections that were declared null, party representatives told the newswire LETA September 6.

LSM reported that at two Rīga polling stations, unsealed ballots were found, the total amounting to 627. It was decided to invalidate the unsealed ballot envelopes and the votes contained therein. The number of mandates received by Harmony and New Unity in the newly elected Rīga City Council may be affected by the election ballots not included in the vote count due to them being unsealed.

Four parties - New Harmony, Harmony, Latvian Russian Union and Alternative - appealed the results to the Central Election Commission (CVK). CVK later denied all these requests, saying that the responsible institution for this would be the court.

Subsequently, New Harmony has taken the case to court with a request to cancel the results obtained at the two polling stations and hold a re-election at these stations.

CVK chair Kristīne Bērziņa told LETA that the newly elected City Council will not be able to start work until the court decision is taken. The court has to decide within seven days.
