None of KGB-archived candidates will be banned from being elected

None of the seven parliamentary candidates whose names are in the files of the National Security Committee (KGB) will be prevented from being elected to the 14th Saeima because they have not been employees of the KGB, said the Constitution Protection Bureau (SAB).

As reported earlier by LSM, the Constitution Protection Bureau (SAB)'s Centre for the Documentation of the Consequences of Totalitarianism has identified seven names of the 14th Saeima deputy candidates in the files of the National Security Committee (KGB). They are referred to as KGB agents, so they are not prevented from participating in elections. Moreover, of these seven people, four candidates have not been identified by the court to having cooperated with the KGB.

If they were establishment employees of the KGB, they would have been prevented from participating in the elections. This Law stipulates that persons who are employees of foreign State security services, intelligence services, or counter-intelligence services, or persons who have been employees of the State of the USSR, Latvian PSR State security service, intelligence service, or counter-intelligence service may not be elected to the Saeima.

At the same time, the Law shall not prevent persons from standing as candidates when they may have cooperated with the security services of the USSR, Latvian PSR or foreign state, intelligence services, or counterintelligence services as external employees, agents, residents, or conspirative apartment holders of these services, if they have not been establishment employees of these services.
