Šlesers said that the faction agreed to support the candidacy of Pīlēns if he “presents a reform plan with a view to reforming Latvia's economy”.
Support for this position has been expressed in advance by the LPV politicians. Šlesers said: “Uldis Pīlēns declared himself a reformer, we can clearly count on the support of our party if he continues this reform course.”
Šlesers expressed confidence that Pīlēns would be elected as President of the State and would only need one round of elections. Šlesers also believes that there is not enough support for the election of the second official candidate – the incumbent Egils Levits – in the parliament.
The presidential vote will take place on May 31, 2023. For a full account of how the president is chosen on voting day, check this story from our archives. In addition, the official presidential website has plenty of information in English.
