Jobs to go amid Rēzekne municipal reorganization

Attempts to streamline public administration in the city of Rēzekne following a lengthy period of political and budgetary turmoil will likely lead to job losses, reports Latvian Radio November 4.

Several accountancy roles and similar positions in various departments are likely to be liquidated and the Sports Department will be disbanded on December 31, transferring its tasks to the Education Department.

"Our goal for this reorganization is not to get rid of specific people, we are looking to create a logical system," said the temporary head of administration, Guna Puce.

In the process of optimizing the work of the debt-ridden municipality, the Communication department will also be reorganized from the new year, with staff numbers reduced from six to two. There will also be a shake-up at the "Zeimuls" creative center, which offers education of interest to children and young people in the city, which will turn from a municipal institution into an educational institution.

However, the temporary administration appointed to run the municipality amid political and financial chaos can not yet say precisely how much money will be saved by the changes as next year's budget is still being prepared.

According to Puce financing of the city's public transport and street maintenance are priority issues for financing.
